Types of Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration typically occurs in one of two forms: dry or wet. Dry macular generation is the most common and is seen in 9 out of 10 patients. In this type, microscopic protein deposits form under the macula. These deposits build up over time and cause the macula to become thinner, which leads to gradual vision loss.

Wet macular degeneration develops when the blood vessels grow to a large size. The vessels are located under the macula and retina of the eye. When the blood vessels begin to leak, fluid and blood expand into the eye, which creates pressure and damages the retina. As a result, you may see dark spots in your vision. While this version of macular degermation is rare, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible since it can cause central vision loss.

Treatment for Macular Degeneration

An eye exam is the first step in treating macular degeneration. Once our optometrist confirms that the disease is present and its type, we can provide treatment that is suited for your condition. In addition, we can also perform various tests that can confirm the damage that may have already occurred to the eye. While there is no cure for MD, treatment can help slow down the progression and we can address the symptoms. Your treatment may include dietary supplements, injections, or laser therapy, depending on your specific case.
